Empathy For Antigone and Creon

In a paragraph of 8-12 sentences, respond to the following prompt. Be sure that you post your SCR to the blog to receive credit.
According to Aristotle, the aim of tragedy is to arouse pity and through an alteration in the status of the central character. He adds that, "pity is aroused by unmerited misfortune, fear by the misfortune of a man [or woman] like ourselves". Decide which character causes you to feel more pity and fear: Creon or Antigone. Then argue why this character is more relatable. Which values or flaws does the character have that you find empathetic and why?

Antigone and Creon are two of the main and contradicting characters in this play. Each of them have their values and flaws, but I find myself empathizing with Antigone more than I do with Creon. Antigone is someone values and priorities that match with mine. She has a close bond with her family and loves them unconditionally which I find more worthy and respectable compared to Creon's affiliations with patriotism over personal relations. I do find his intent honorable; however, Antigone also arouses an overbearing sense of pity and fear within me, whereas Creon's fate is something that I see as self-inflicted because of his prideful manner in receiving the throne and its powers. In my perspective, Antigone is someone who did what was in the best interest of her family, and her death sentence seems unjust. It also inspires a sense of fear for her in because of her misfortune. Antigone is relatable to myself in the sense that she puts her family above all, and I realize that if I were placed in a similar situation, the consequences that Antigone faces would be my own punishment. Thus, I find myself having more pity and empathy for Antigone rather than Creon because I find my values and traits more compatible with hers.

  1. I'm with you on this one, Ira. I find Antigone more empathetic than Creon, but Cooper makes a good case from Creon in his post.
