Antigone(Bird)

   The governing metaphor in the sentry's passage about Antigone is a metaphor of a bird. The sentry compares Antigone's movements to that of a bird. The entry repeatedly refers to the movement of Antigone to that of a bird. On page 80, the sentry states compares her movements by illustrating them, "Twisting a great dust-storm up from the earth." He goes on to say, "She cried out a sharp, piercing cry, like a bird come back to an empty nest" (80). He further explains, "When she sees the corpse bare she bursts into a long shattering wail" (80). This metaphor speaks of Antigone's character by outlining two main ideas. The fact that she would yell in frustration after seeing her work undone shows that she is passionate enough express her zeal, even if it meant being caught by the guards. By crying out, she shows that she no longer has any reason to remain hidden or concealed while breaking the law set by Creon. Secondly, Antigone's actions being compared to a bird is symbolic of her graceful movement. Birds are not always seen frantically beating their wings to stay in the air. Instead, they beat their wings and gently coast until the time arises for them to put forth effort once more. Antigone's movements were compared to that of a bird and showed how graceful and stealthy she was moving to the corpse. Her sharp reaction, however, is not very stealthy. But, it does contribute to the metaphor of a shocked and angry bird that comes home to a nest empty of its eggs. This moment is important to her character development for the reason that she is committed to her cause and shows that she is unwavering in her attitude, even if it means sure death. This is shown because the sentry conveys a tone of fear in his voice, showing Antigone's conviction and solemn determination. This shows how these actions led to Antigone's character development.
