Antigone vs Ismene
In Antigone there is a standard for women and Antigone breaks that by not listening to the ruler (Creon) and she burys her dead brother to honor him.Ismene does not help Antigone because she is afraid of the consequences. So in this case Ismene is more like a stereotypical women then Antigone because she plays it on the safe side and is afraid of her punishments. In Anthem and the Hunger Games Katniss and The Golden One are not typical women because they also staand up for what they believe in and they are not afraid of the Hierarchy.

Antigone vs. Ismene
Antigone and Ismene are very different types of women. Antigone has a more bold personality who fights for what she believes in, even if it means breaking the law put in place by a higher authority. In her mind she has established a hierarchy in which the gods are placed far above the ruler(s) of any country that even exists. When Creon has given the order to dishonor the remains of the dead, she disobeys the law in order to follow what is correct in the eyes of the gods, for she believes that their command is more important than someone who is lower than them in the authoritative hierarchy. This independent thinking and portrayal of individual motivation is an example of Antigone's transcendence of the traditional gender role of females. On the contrary, Ismene seems to have a more reserved personality. She is very hesitant to fight for a personal cause simply because she wishes to submit to the higher authority of government. She finds it more important to listen to the immediate higher power regardless of punishments she might endure for not obeying the laws of the gods. Her priorities are different from Antigone, and she wishes to live rather than risk her life for someone who is already dead. This set of priorities and train of thought seems to be more easily characterized as a stereotypical woman's point of view. In the The Hunger Games and Anthem, the female characters portrayed defy the stereotypical view of women. Katniss and The Golden One both break and bend the rules to eventually come out alive. These characters are shown as strong, independent, and quite daring. Both of these novels do not assign typical gender roles to the characters. They show both female characters take big risks and go through many life threatening challenges. They help to portray the possible defiance of gender roles from both sexes.
Stereotyped Women or Women Themselves
Antigone and Ismene are women, but are different types of women. Antigone represents the feminist woman who tries to go against Partiarchy. Ismene stays quiet and follows the rules going along with Patriarchy, doing this so that she does not get in trouble with those who believe men are more powerful. In The Hunger Games, Katniss is a feminist character. Throughout the actual games she does not follow any other men tributes and is independent. Many of the other female tributes that are in a group follow the Cato, who is a man, to lead them. They are strong women for the skills they have and pursued, but are weak for not leading themselves individually. The novels do portray men and women with their stereotyped roles, but characters like Antigone go against the stereotypes. This creates different perspectives in the book Antigone.
-Mufaro M.
The typical women
Antigone and Ismene are two very different characters. Antigone subverts her typical role as a women by being very strong headed and standing up for feminism. Ismene on the other hand stays quite and goes along with men's orders. She follows along with patriarchy idea. Most women so far seem to follow this idea and the men follow the idea they are better than the women. In Anthem The Golden One follows more with patriarchy because she always follows along with what Equality says. I believe this makes her weak because she needs Equality to make a decisions and is not independent. This could change after she is more comfortable with having freedom. Equality and The Golden One both take on the stereotypical gender roles because Equality is in charge and The Golden One follows along through out the whole book. Katniss is the opposite because she is not afraid to stand up and be a leader no matter if it is for her family or a group of people. She is also very strong because she went through the torture of the games twice and was able to handle incredible amounts of emotional stress. The men in The Hunger Games follow the stereotypical role by acting strong and doing manly jobs. The women in The Hunger Games have a blurry line because most women such as Katniss' mom follow the stereotypical role of being housewives and being weak. Then certain women such as Rue stand up and do something very brave. This breaks the stereotypical role of women. In today's society the stereotypical roles are not the common role anymore so it is interesting to analyze these roles.
Diffrences in Sisters
Antigone is strong. She isn't afraid to speak her mind even when time comes to confront the king. Therefore Antigone does not fallow the stereo types of this time. The stereo types of women, they are week, women fallow mens' orders and never disobey. A better example to represent the norm would be Ismene. She show this belief when she is arguing with Antigone about the burial of their brother. Ismene even says "we are women,we're not born to contend with men." Katniss mirrors Antigone in rebelling against higher power. Antigone buried her brother who was to rot on the battle field; Katniss would go to the forest and hunt, something she was forbidden to do. Both of these women rebelled for self less reasons, Katniss broke the rules to feed her family, Antigone broke the rules to honor their family. Both women are strong.
Feminist or Wimp?
Antigone doesn't follow the usual stereotypes of a woman because she voices her opinion and stands up for herself. She goes against Creon shockingly and buries Polynicies. Ismene is the opposite of Antigone and just walks around like a brainless shell.
Stereotypical Gender Roles In Antigone
Antigone and her sister have very different views as to the roles of women and their expected place in society. Ismene believes that women have a very certain code of conduct that they are supposed to follow and they are supposed to make themselves appear inferior to men. Antigone believes the opposite. Antigone says that women are equal of or better than men and women were not made to show themselves as delicate and inferior. Anthem follows a very similar role to the sayings of Ismene. Women are made inferior and delicate as to their say in society, and the force of labor that they do.The Hunger Games follows a very different approach as to the fact that women are more able and are not that inferior to men. Women are Strong in the Hunger Games. Hunger Games does not portray women in specific gender roles whereas the other two novels do.

Gender Stereotypes in Antigone
In Antigone, the differences and stereotypes of women and men are highly expressed in their society. Antigone and Ismene are both very different types of women. Antigone subverts her role as a typical woman with her stubborn, yet decisive nature. She does what she pleases and although she can act 'properly' she shows her rejection of the stereotypical woman role when she buries her brother. Ismene on the other hand, upholds the role of a woman when she decides to stand idle rather than help Antigone bury her brother. Ismene fears to intervene with the matters of men while men are portrayed as decision makers, providers, and the stronger gender. The genders in Antigone are very stereotypical and it impacts the story greatly.
Antigone The Rebel
Antigone The Rebel
antigone is a very rebelious character. She is not lady like at all. I picture her as being very big and burly. She also seems deppressed alot of the time. Like something really hit her hard. Iseme is a more girly character. She seems more chirpy and lady like. She also seems very weak. They are both very diverese and intresting characters.

Stereotypical Roles in Antigone
In Antigone, Ismene is the typical woman of the time period. She follows the rules and knows the men are leaders. Since Antigone is a patriarchy society, Ismene upholds the stereotypical woman. But Antigone is the complete opposite, she challenges the laws brought by Creon. She follows her values and beliefs. In Antigone, the women portrayed are weak. In the books Anthem and The Hunger Games, Gaea and Katniss, are strong women. Katniss is a strong woman, but the ones around her are also somewhat weak. They don't have any power either especially in the capitol. In Anthem, the women are equally weak, only Gaea stands up for what she believes. Katniss, Gaea, and Antigone show strong women, and the ones around them in the societies are generally weaker. For most of the books, the women and men uphold their stereotypical gender roles, only a few exceptions are seen such as Antigone, Katniss, and Gaea.
Antigone vs. Ismene stereotype vs. extremist
In Antigone Ismene upholds the the stereotypes of women while Antigone subverts the stereotypes. Throughout the book so far Ismene has supported many female stereotypes. For example Ismene was unwilling to stand up to authority to do what she believed to be right along with Antigone. Ismene even said that a women's place was to follow and not question men, that her role was to obey. Meanwhile Antigone was going out being courageous and deciding not to stop doing what she believes in just because she was told not to. She ended showing that she has strong beliefs and is willing to stick to those beliefs. Unlike Ismene and the stereotypes that say women are to obey and not try to defy men. That is why Ismene upholds the stereotypes of women and Antigone subverts the stereotypes of women.
Antigone and Ismene are two very different type of women. Ismene confines within the stereotype for women, portrayed as weaker and less powerful than men. Antigone on the other hand, is rebellious, and willing to stand up for what she believes in. Both Katniss and Antigone are strong women in my opinion; they fight to protect their rights and traditions. In Antigone, men and women follow both of their stereotypical gender roles, but I see that the districts in the Hunger Games are the women with no power, and the Capitol being the men, with all the power.
Female Character Stereotypes: Antigone vs. Ismene
Antigone is very courageous, generous/loyal, determined/cunning, family-oriented, and confident. She has a fiery personality. Overall, she is just not the average stereotypical female. On the other hand, Ismene is very obedient/respectful, responsible, poised, intelligent, calm, and graceful. She has a very original personality as a girl. Overall, she is the exact stereotypical female in terms of personality. Antigone is an individual who is a mere and obvious reflection of Katniss from the Hunger Games: the personality of the protagonist/hero who ends up being female. This is not a pretty common personality to possess and it can be good to have. The sisters are both 2 very different individuals. The point is: not everyone is the same and it could be a good thing or a bad thing in any case whether it is stereotypical or not. In the Hunger Games, the people who live there are expected to act a certain way. They must be brave and strong for their country when forced to fight to the death just for the entertainment of the Capital. In Anthem, the people who live there are also expected to act a certain way. They must show no anger for the laws of their society and do as they are told to do when it comes to employment, where to go and where not to go, and many other dystopian characteristics. They are forced to live in a world where there is no love, joy, liberty, passion, or hope. Both the Hunger Games and Anthem are very dystopian whereas Antigone is not as much dystopian, but instead is based off patriarchy and restricts or prohibits feminism.
Antigone vs. Ismene and Women vs. Men.
Ismene upholds her role as a typical women. When she didn't want to help Antigone burry her brother Ismene didn't want to go against the rules. All she wanted to do was follow the rules and not do anything against the king. On the other hand Antigone subverts her role as a typical women. She wants to test the boundries given, not follow the rules. In Anthem they are weak women. They work in the field picking food or cotten. Doing what typical women do. It is much different in Hunger Games because many women such as Katniss are put into the games to fight to the death. So they have to be strong and fight the boys.
-Caitlynn McCollum
Antigone vs. Ismene
In the play Antigone, Ismene and Antigone are two characters with very different views and personality traits. Ismene of course upholds the female stereotype because she understands that in a patriarchal society, men are considered to have higher authority. Antigone on the other hand, subverts the female stereotype because she knows the consequences of standing up to man's authority but does it anyway.Antigone is the typical rebellious young woman who thinks she can go against the laws of a woman and come out just fine in the end. Gender roles also appear in The Hunger Games because the leaders (The Capitol) are all men, woman are not the dominant gender and don't have any power. But Katniss challenges this in the Games and tries to fool and step up to the men of the Capitol, which subverts the female stereotype.
-Anna Eckhoff
-Anna Eckhoff
Antigone is a rebellious woman and subverts the sterotypes made of women. She acts very strong and is not proper. She also does not keep quite like sterotypes say women should. Antigone stands up for herself and says what she feels. Ismene on the other hand upholds the sterotypes made of women. She acts prim and proper. Ismene also keeps quite and does not say what she feels like the sterotypical woman should. In Anthem The Golden One was more of the sterotypical woman because she went along with whatever Equality said.
Antigone and Ismene's Roles in Society
Antigone and Ismene are very different in their personalities. Ismene is docile and upholds the role of a woman in a patriarchal society, while Antigone subverts it because she is headstrong and independent. in Anthem and The Hunger Games, the women are equal to men. They have their own jobs in society, and the same rules apply to them, only in The Hunger Games, the women are meant to be strong and independent, which is opposite to Anthem.
Ismene upholds her role as a stereotypical woman in this period time because a stereotypical woman follows the rules that are set by the men, she does as she is told, she preforms all the feminin tasks such as cleaning, cooking, ect. Antigone subverts her role.
In Antigone Ismene upholds the female stereotype while Antigone subverts the female stereotype. Ismene upholds the female stereotype as she refuses to stand up to male authority. She even says at one point that as females their duties were to listen, and not dispute the matters of men. She openly says
Gender Roles in Antigone, Anthem, and The Hunger Games
Ismene and Antigone are two different women, one who holds the typical "woman" like standard and one who does not. I think that Ismene is more like the usual view of a woman, obeying the laws that Creon puts down, while Antigone is the one disobeying the laws of her country and doing the dirtywork of burying her brother. Ismene seems to change slightly by showing bravery and disobediance when Antigone is caught. In the other books, The Hunger Games and Anthem, the characters show a element of not being typical girls either. Katniss, from The Hunger Games, is strong and knows how to kill, which is today not a Feminine like stereotypical feature. The Golden One from Anthem, is also less Feminine like antigone because she disobeys the rules of the anthem city.

Books Playing the Role of the Sterotype
Antigone and Ismene both show strong charcteristics of the women sterotype. An example of this is when Antigone was asking Ismene to help her bury the body of her brother which should the sterotypes that women are physically weak and that they are constatnly asking for help. Another example of feminant steroytypes represented in other books such as Anthem is that (even with all the strict rules) women had a lack of rights and job oppurtunities. But the feminant sterotype is not shown as much in Hunger Games, instead of everyone expecting Peeta to win, everybody expected Catnis to win in a game of strengths. This character does not follow the role of the stereotypical "female role". In most books, the women are thought of as weak which Antigone portrays very well as already explained in the beginning when she asks for help to bury her brothers body.
Ismene vs. Antigone
In the book Antigone, the two sisters Antigone and Ismene are quite different. Ismene falls into the characteristics that has been associated with a typical woman. She also does not want to stand up to men are the patriarchical society. Antigone is quite different from Ismene in this sense. She is willing to fight for what she believes in, and she sands up to the men. She is showing a strong sense
stereotypical roles
Ismene and Antigone are different types of women because Ismene follows the rules of patriarchy and knows that woman are followers and can't have a say in anything that happens. Antigone on the other hand represents feminism and doesn't follow the rules that man have set for them to follow. In the hunger games women are weak yet strong because they don't have any power, but they hold their ground with everything that goes wrong. Yes, the novels portray women and men as they're expected stereotypical roles for the most part because men are strong in the books and the women back away. Heroic women stand up and are strong though, so they stand out, such as Antigone and Katniss.

Tragic Hero
A tragic hero is a character whose suffering could save a society or bring happiness. Their destiny is defeat or having a downfall. The tragic hero has a flaw that will give the audience a sense of sympathy or compassion. In Antigone I predict that there will be a main character that has a flaw that we will feel bad about. That character will have a struggle and will most likely come to defeat or a death in the book. That is where the definition of tragic hero will come in play with the book.
-Mufaro
A. A tragic hero is the main character of a tragedy. THey are a hero who suffers from a tragic flaw that eventually causes downfall.
B. Based on our Oedipus Rex performances, I think that in Antigone there will be a powerful individual who ends up having a flaw that leads to a tragic event and a struggle. Overall, I think the idea of a tragic hero will appear in the book.

Oedipus (because he ATTEMPTED to save his town from a plague) but at the end will be fail or be defeated under the inevitable circumstances of the story and or plot. An example of this could be Harvey Dent from The Dark Knight. He was designed to represent a hero, but also designed to be corrupted to show the corruption of politics and gang violence.
-Adam Gourmos
A. A tragic hero is an honorable hero, who faces hardship and destruction generally for a greater cause. He may face death, and accept it, because it results in an improved society. If it’s a play or book, the audience will feel sorry for this tragic hero. The hero may be doomed from the beginning, or because of hubris, which means they have too much self-pride. The tragic hero will be the protagonist of a tragic story.
B. Oedipus Rex was a story of total humiliation and pain, where the man kills his father and marries (and sleeps with) his mother. Antigone has close relation to this man, as being the daughter, and sister. I believe with these two prompts combined, Antigone will be a story of a tragic hero who faces many struggles.

Tragic Hero-
A tragic hero is usually a protagonist in literature. He is a character who makes a grave mistake that ends badly. The combination of fate and his mistake destines his downfall in a tragic way that will evoke a sense of sympathy, pain, or compassion from the audience.
B)
Antigone-
Oedipus Rex left off where it only concerned the king. The book did not at all explain his family outside of Jocasta, Laius, and Creon. Based on this, I thinkAntigone will describe the aftermath that occurred as a result of the events inOedipus Rex, and because Antigone is the sister/daughter of Oedipus, the book will be tragic in describing her life after Oedipus banished himself.

A) A tragic hero is protagonist of a tragedy. A tragic hero has exceptionally great qualities that signify his power over others. A tragic hero in literature often commits to, or makes a mistake that results in the hero's destruction or death. The tragic hero is seemed to be the good guy throughout the story until the end when he/ she makes a mistake. An example of a tragic hero would be Prometheus because his heroic action of gifting fire to humans resulted in him getting a severe punishment.
B) Based on Oedipus Rex performances, my prediction for Antigone would be that his daughter, Antigone, is going to illustrate the sight of her father becoming a tragic hero, or she may even become a tragic hero herself. She may try to make her family's name great again but make a tragic mistake in the process.

A tragic hero is a person that is great or virtuous person that inevitably falls into a dramatic tragedy. I think that in Antigone Antigone will have some kind of soul searching journey and try to redeem the tragic hero of her father in Oedipus.
-Swirvine
A Tragic Hero is someone, usually a king, whom kills himself. He kills himself because of his own actions, not because of his fate and kills himself for the greater good. The death has a meaningful idea behind it. In Antigone, I think there will be the new king (Creon) who will have a flaw and in the end have to kill himself. The King will have done something toAntigone. There might be another prophecy involved that will tell Creon what he did wrong.

Tragic Hero Definition
A tragic hero is a very interesting type of person. This person is destined for doom or will eventually fall somehow according to their destiny. They also had a tragic mistake they committed that lead to their downfall. There error in judgment leads them to their downfall but they didn’t play the only role in their doom but they also had external forces working against them. I personally think that Antigone, will end up being a tragic hero because Oedipus messed up her life so much (in terms of family) that she will eventually make an error in judgment. I think she is going to follow in the footsteps of Oedipus and not knowingly screw up and eventually either kill herself or be killed.

The definition of a tragic hero is a character with the traits of a common hero that is designed to fail or be defeated to show the moral of the story. How this could play a part in Antigone that also played a part in Oedipus Rex is that the main character will resemble a hero such as Oedipus (because he ATTEMPTED to save his town from a plague) but at the end will be fail or be defeated under the inevitable circumstances of the story and or plot. Aristotle first used the word tragic hero; a tragic hero is a protagonist character who has made an error that causes a tragedy that may have a good outcome, eventually. Their suffering affects the society as a whole. It is the main character and they make a decision that causes a complication that can even be fatal. In Antigone I predict in Antigone the main character, Oedipus’s daughter will be a tragic hero that faces a life changing decision that could be fatal to her or others, just like in Oedipus Rex.

A Tragic Hero
- A tragic hero is a protagonist in a story who, against all odds or opposition, is heroic, but their heroic deeds end with them dying or being put into pain. A tragic hero also accepts their tragedy and continues to be heroic. A tragic hero also brings out pity from the audience of the literature or art through having misfortunate and undeserved pain done on them. I think a tragic hero must be at some relatively high place so that they can be brought down as part of the tragedy, for example, Oedipus the king, who lost his throne.
- Based on the class’s Oedipus Rex Performances, I think that the story Antigone will be about Oedipus in his later years after losing the throne and blinding himself. I think that plot throughout Antigone will show Oedipus’s journey and eventually his death, and Antigone, Oedipus’s daughter, will play a significant role.
A tragic hero is a character that is considered a great or victorious in a dramatic tragedy that is destined for downfall and failure. A tragic hero is born noble and then their own destruction of themselves causes this downfall. An example of a tragic hero is Shakespeare’s Macbeth. He was told by witches that he is the true Thane of many lands and he relays more and more on the prophecies told by the witches. Then he kills many to become what the witches told him he was.
In Antigone I believe that the community will be in a bad shape and Oedipus Rex daughter will find out about her dads tragic mishap and become devastated. I believe Antigone will then go and try to make things right so that the community will then be good again and in better shape. She will then become a hero but not become a hero like her father did. -Hannah
A tragic hero is a character in a story that is set up by the author for failure. This person is made to experience suffering or pain in the story, which makes the audience or readers feel pitty, sadness, or fear. If the audience does not feel these emotions, then there is no tragic hero. Although the character goes through a moral defect that leads a tradegy, the character gains self awareness. A tragic hero could preform un-heroic actions in the story but in the end, the hero has a realization of the wrongness of their actions. I predict that Antigone will have many tragic heros because of the information that was revealed in Oedipus Rex. -Sydney
2. a. A tragic hero is a character in a text that makes a mistake and has a fatal flaw mixed with a fate that brings them to be tragic.
b. Based on Oedipus Rex, Antigone's main tragic event will have to do with the fact that she is Odedipus' sister and daughter. Therefore, causing conflicts in her life. Based on her father/brothers life she will most likely fallow his footsteps. She will think highly of her self- to go on a quest and end up failing causing a tragic story.

A tragic hero is a character in a story, often the protagonist, who makes a mistake that ultimately leads to his/her defeat or demise. Tragic heroes are often built by sympathy and guilt, and often succumb to the forces that they have always been fighting. I predict that in Antigone, the main character will be some sort of hero of his/her society, and then lose a close friend, loved one, or make a mistake that will cause him/her to be defeated by common forces that they have either been working with, or have been fighting.

- A tragic Hero is the main character/ protagonist of a tragic story. Most of the Greek Tragedies have a tragic hero. In Oedipus Rex, Oedipus is the tragic hero because he finds out he killed his father and eventually jab out his eyes. He was supposed to be a king but then he found out he was the actual murderer of the old king.
- Based on Oedipus Rex, I would think that in Antigone, Antigone would find his father/brother because Oedipus did not die but still ran away because he found out he had killed his father, the king. Or that Antigone would be a tragic hero. She would somehow kill him and not know for a long period of time. When she finds out she would be heart broken. Just like Oedipus was he found out he killed his own father. -Mark
A tragic hero is the hero of a tragedy. A person who saves someone or some people from a tragedy in the world. For example, if a Sea dragon was attacking a ship and someone killed it, that someone would be a tragic hero. Jack sparrow is a tragic hero when he was fighting Davy Jones in that maelstrom at the end of the series.
Based on what we have done and read about Oedipus Rex, I think what’s going to happen in Antigone is Oedipus Rex is going to be running away from the castle and is going to meet someone who heals his physical and mental wounds. This might help him to go back and rule the castle again. He will probably not rule the castle again however because when he was king he did not rule his kingdom very well like a king should’ve done. I believe that Oedipus will most likely find someone who helps him on his journey and then either start a new town and rule it or possibly kill himself if he can’t be healed.

A tragic hero is the protagonist of a tragedy; they are the main character in a sad story that is set to fail at whatever they want to do. Based on the Oedipus Rex performances my prediction for Antigone is that there will be a tragic hero as
a main character. With how Oedipus Rex ended with him leaving the town and that being very sad then Antigone has to be similar since she is his daughter. Also in Antigone I predict that it will be a sad story and something really bad will happen to Antigone.

Getting Started
Hello!
This is Mrs. Hendricks, your awesome English teacher. Today I want to introduce you to our very own class blog. You have a few assignments to complete while we're in the computer lab today. I'm going to provide instructions for you right here in this post. Eventually, you'll be able to create and publish your own blog posts for everyone in the class to read. Before we get started on that, here are a few tips for blogging etiquette.
1. Always sign your name at the end of every single post!
2. Remember that this is an academic blog. You should be appropriate at all times. Please proof your writing before posting. Your writing should reflect your best academic effort. This isn't like texting your friends or writing on Facebook. It should be more formal.
3. Be kind and encouraging of your classmates. Engage in helpful and constructive discussions.
4. Remember that this blog is a public space. Do not write anything that you don't want everyone in our class to know about.
5. Be creative, and have fun! This is your space. It's an electronic extension of our classroom. It should reflect your personalities, opinions, and creativity. Happy blogging.
TODAY'S ASSIGNMENT:There are a few parts to today's assignment. Please respond to the writing portion in a Word document which you will email to me before you leave today. My email address is the following: chendricks3@cherrycreekschools.org.
1. Create a Word document where you will respond to the below writing prompts.
2. Writing portion:
a) Quickly search the following term on the internet: "tragic hero." According to your findings, write a brief definition of the tragic hero in your own words.
b) Based on our Oedipus Rex performances, what can you guess might happen in Antigone?Make a couple of educated guesses.
3. Sign your name under your writing.
4. Email me your Word document.
5. Create a Gmail account.
6. Commenting portion: Read and comment on at least one post. It's okay if you comment on this post. I simply want you to understand how to comment on blog posts. If you do not get to this before we leave the lab, please remember to do it for homework.
